EXPERIENCE
Dr. Lutz's work has covered a broad range of antitrust, intellectual property and commercial damages issues in a variety of industries, including health care, oil and gas, insurance, building products, aerospace, retail franchises, restaurants, air cargo and real estate. She has studied relevant markets, predatory pricing, price discrimination, vertical restraints, tying arrangements, mergers and acquisitions, antitrust damages, valuation of patents and trade secrets, and the calculation of damages resulting from infringement. In addition, Dr. Lutz has analyzed economic damages in numerous commercial litigations.
Dr. Lutz has special interests in both antitrust and health care issues. Selected previous projects include an analysis of alleged price discrimination in the bunker fuel industry, a determination of the effect of alleged unfair competitive practices on a major residential real estate brokerage franchiser, an evaluation of the competitive effects of withheld staff privileges or preferred provider status, and an analysis of alleged attempted monopolization of physician services. She has also prepared a study of the economic effects of state health insurance regulations and co-authored a health care industry report entitled
Trends in Southern California Health Care: The Role of Hospitals in Southern California's Managed Care Environment.
Prior to joining NERA, Dr. Lutz was with Analysis Group/Economics, Inc., where she worked primarily on antitrust, health care and intellectual property cases as well as general business litigation issues. She has also served as a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Finance and Business Economics at USC's School of Business and Administration.
Dr. Lutz received a B.A. with honors in Economics from Claremont McKenna College, then worked for the Boston Consulting Group in Chicago prior to attending graduate school. She received her Ph.D. in Economics from the Anderson Graduate School of Management of the University of California at Los Angeles, where her areas of study included industrial organization, game theory and the economics of information and uncertainty. Dr. Lutz is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
