EXPERIENCE
Brian T. McMahon has a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Psychology from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He is currently Professor and Chair of the Rehabilitation Counseling Department at Virginia Commonwealth University. As a health care manager in the 1980s, he developed brain injury rehabilitation programs at all levels of care, but particularly post-acute, transitional living centers. Dr. McMahon has authored over 90 publications and has co-edited four books on matters of employment and disability. He is a leading educator in the area of implementing the Americans with Disabilities Act. He is a Fellow in the American Psychological Association. Dr. McMahon served on the Governing Council of the American Counseling Association as well as the boards of four national professional associations, including a term as President of the American Rehabilitation Counseling Association. His awards include "Outstanding Rehabilitation Educator of the Year" from the National Association of Rehabilitation Professionals in the Private Sector, the "Alumni Association Award for Teaching Excellence" from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, the "James F. Garret Career Research Award" from the American Rehabilitation Counseling Association, and the "University of Wisconsin George N. Wright Varsity Award" for Outstanding Achievement by an Alumnus. His clinical specializations include substance abuse, mental health, disordered gambling, deafness, traumatic brain injury, and disability policy and legislation.
